It is used as a methylating agent and carbonylating agent in chemical synthesis and is used in the preparation of pesticides and herbicides.

Dimethyl carbonate is an intermediate of the herbicide and is also a methylating agent.

Dimethyl carbonate can replace the traditional toxic raw materials such as phosgene, dimethyl sulfate and methyl chloride.
