Colorless or light brown transparent oily liquid with bitter almond flavor. Non-volatile, slightly soluble in water (11 7g]lOOg water). Soluble in ethanol, ether and benzene. Orange in the presence of sulfuric acid.
preparation
Phenol and excess sodium hydroxide are mixed into sodium phenolate solution, heated to 60 ~ 65ºC, and chloroform is slowly added. The reaction is purple at first, and gradually turns to orange-red. After the reaction is complete, the excess chloroform is steamed out with steam, and the generated salicylaldehyde sodium salt is neutralized by acid and then steamed out salicylaldehyde with steam.

Salicylaldehyde has a good bactericidal effect and is used as a bactericidal agent in industrial circulating cooling water and oilfield reinjection water treatment. Used as an antiseptic and fungicide in oil fragrances. When the concentration is 50mg/L, 60% of iron bacteria can be killed. 85% sulfate-reducing bacteria. The general dosage for water treatment is 50 ~ lOOmg/L. The use concentration should be within its water-soluble range and can be added directly.Preparation:
- In general, salicylaldehydes can be prepared from salicylic acid through a REDOX reaction. Oxidants are commonly used in acidic potassium permanganate solutions.
- Another preparation method is the chlorination esterification reaction of phenol and chloroform under the catalysis of hydrochloric acid to get salicylaldehyde, and then the hydrolysis reaction under the catalysis of acid to get salicylaldehyde.
