It is a commonly used organic solvent with low volatility and high chemical stability. Tetramethylbenzene is a colorless transparent liquid at room temperature and pressure. It is insoluble in water but soluble in common organic solvents such as ethyl acetate and methylene chloride  Tetramethylbenzene has high chemical stability and is not prone to various chemical reactions. It can undergo Fouck alkylation or Fouck acylation under the action of Lewis acid catalyst. In addition, the benzyl carbon atoms in the structure can be brominated under the action of brominating reagents to form the corresponding benzyl bromide derivatives
