Uses
Deuterated chloroform is a reagent for nuclear magnetic resonance instruments; a raw material for organic synthesis, mainly used to produce Freon (F-21, F-22, F-23), dyes and drugs. In medicine, it is often used as an anesthetic. It can be used as a solvent and extractant for antibiotics, spices, oils, resins, and rubber. Mixed with carbon tetrachloride, it can be made into a non-freezing fireproof liquid. It is also used as a propellant for aerosols, a fumigant for grains, and a standard liquid for calibrating temperature.
Industrial products usually have a small amount of ethanol added to them, so that the generated phosgene reacts with ethanol to generate non-toxic diethyl carbonate. Before using industrial products, add a small amount of concentrated sulfuric acid, shake, and then wash with water, and dry with calcium chloride or potassium carbonate to obtain chloroform without ethanol.
