It is obtained by hydrogenation reduction of furfural. In industrial hydrogenation, there are two kinds of liquid phase hydrogenation and gas phase hydrogenation. Liquid phase hydrogenation method is divided into high pressure method and medium pressure method, high pressure method is mostly operated above 9.8MPa, the temperature is controlled between 170-200ºC, with chromium trioxide and copper oxide as catalyst, the molar ratio of furfural and hydrogen is 1: 42, the conversion rate is between 95-100, the medium pressure method is mostly operated at about 6.73-6.86MPa, and the temperature is controlled at about 160-170. Chromium trioxide and lead oxide are also used as catalysts, and the resulting product is reduced pressure rectification to obtain furfuryl alcohol at 66.5-79.84kPa, and the conversion rate is generally 80-90. The gas phase hydrogenation process is carried out at 0.1-0.39MPa, the temperature is controlled at about 80-170ºC, and nickel or chromium-copper catalyst is used. The friction ratio between furfural and hydrogen is high and the cost is low. Raw material consumption quota furfural 1120kg/t, hydrogen 300m3/t. Colorless or light yellow liquid. The boiling point is 170-171ºC, 68-69ºC (1.33kPa), the relative density is 1.1285 (20/4ºC), the refractive index is 1.4868, and the flash point is 65ºC. It is miscible with water but unstable in aqueous solution, soluble in ethanol, ethyl ether, chlorofrafters and benzene. It turns brownish-red when exposed to light or air, and is often explosive when exposed to inorganic acid. It has a special bitter smell.
