It is used as a methylating agent and carbonylating agent in chemical synthesis and is used in the preparation of pesticides and herbicides.

Dimethyl carbonate is an intermediate of the herbicide and is also a methylating agent.

Dimethyl carbonate can replace the traditional toxic raw materials such as phosgene, dimethyl sulfate and methyl chloride. It can be used for the non-phosgene synthesis of polycarbonate, diphenyl carbonate, isocyanate and allyl diglycol carbonate; for the synthesis of various carbamate pesticides such as carbaryl; organic synthesis intermediates such as dimethyl ether, alkyl aromatic amine, symmetrical diamino urea, methyl hydrazine, etc.; in the pharmaceutical industry, it can be used to prepare aminooxazolidinone, β-ketocarboxylic acid ester pharmaceutical intermediates, etc. In addition, it can also be used as an additive for refrigerator oil and solvent, etc.
