Colorless liquid. Melting point -57.85 ºC. Boiling point 169ºC. The relative density is 0.8665. Refractive index 1.492. Flash point (open cup) 60ºC. Spontaneous ignition point 450ºC. Insoluble in water, can be miscible with alcohol, ether, ketone, benzene and other organic solvents. Flammable.

preparation
The tert-butanol process is derived from the catalytic alkylation of tert-butanol with benzene. The benzene is cooled to 5 ~ 6ºC, aluminum trichloride is added, and the benzene solution of tert-butanol is added after stirring, and the temperature is maintained at 8 ~ 11ºC. After the reaction is completed, the benzene solution is sucked out, and the aluminum trichloride is destroyed by water and extracted with benzene. The benzene liquid is poured into ice water, washed until neutral, and the benzene and low boiling point matter are steamed, and the fraction of 161.5 ~ 174ºC is collected.
The isobutene process is obtained by combining isobutene with benzene in the presence of aluminum trichloride.
